March 6, 2024 – Olmsted Falls – In a heartwarming return to Olmsted Falls Middle School, math and science teacher Leigh Carver experienced firsthand the impact of empathy and compassion among her students following her recovery from a serious medical procedure. Last September, Carver underwent a craniotomy to address a brain hemorrhage caused by a cavernous malformation. This life-threatening experience significantly affected her, marking the roughest period of her life, yet it also set the stage for a profound experience within her classroom.
After implementing Rachel’s Challenge at the school—a program aimed at cultivating a culture of kindness—Carver discussed her medical ordeal with her students, transforming the classroom into a space of mutual understanding and support. Her openness about her struggles led to an outpouring of empathy from students, who extended gestures of kindness, from flowers to heartfelt notes, demonstrating the values taught through Rachel’s Challenge.
She said, “See, this is what empathy and compassion is all about. That you’re going to share your story with me and now I have a better understanding of you. Overall, I want to make a deeper connection with my students.”
