October 17, 2024 – ALTOONA, PA – Rachel Scott, the first victim of the 1999 Columbine massacre, left behind diaries that became the foundation of Rachel’s Challenge. This program, shared through a moving presentation by a Rachel’s Challenge speaker at Altoona Area High School, aims to inspire kindness through five goals: eliminating prejudice, journaling goals, choosing positive influences, speaking kindly, and encouraging a “chain reaction” of kindness.
During the event, students and community members signed a banner, committing to Rachel’s Challenge. The message, bolstered by touching stories and videos of Rachel’s life, deeply affected attendees, with some visibly moved to tears. Superintendent Brad Hatch praised the Friends of Rachel club’s impact, particularly highlighting the school’s Rachel’s Closet, which provides free clothing and essentials to students.
Students shared how they were inspired by the presentation, including one who decided to mend her relationship with her father. The message of kindness resonated with both students and parents, reinforcing the culture of compassion the district strives to cultivate.
